Introduction to Learning Birdsong
Imagine for a moment you are listening to the 110-piece New York Philharmonic Orchestra playing Beethoven’s 9th.
Beautiful.
Now try to imagine that each section of the orchestra is playing a different song. This more closely resembles what it can be like when listening to birds singing during the breeding season.
Confusing doesn’t come close to describing it.
Now, take it one step farther and imagine that each instrument in a given section is playing a slightly different version of their section’s song. That resembles listening to birds singing even better because almost all birds have variations of their song, some just a few, others many.
It is now beyond confusing; it has moved into the realm of frustrating and that is where we lose the attention of many birders.
But, what if there was a way to learn birdsong that eliminates much, if not all of this confusion and frustration? Could you learn birdsong better and faster if there was a way to grasp the various songs in the midst of that confusion?
We think you can.
No, check that! We KNOW you can!
Welcome to Birdsong 101!
One of the problems with learning birdsong lies in the fact that they only sing for a small part of the year and the rest of the year, they’re pretty much silent. We learn them one year and by the next breeding season, we’ve forgotten everything we thought we knew, and have to learn them all over again.
However, there are some, as you will see, that continue to sing throughout the year and you can bet we’ll take advantage of that little quirk in their personalities.
Birdsong 101 wants to put an end to all of these problems once and for all. We want to help you learn birdsong because of our four core beliefs:
- People more fully enjoy birding, indeed the entire world of birds, when they can identify birds by sight and sound.
- There is a teaching technique that encompasses more ways of learning than just listening to a birdsong CD.
- Birdsong can and should be enjoyed year-round. And, most importantly …
- We believe in YOU! We know you can do it!
