Welcome to Birdsong 101

Being able to identify birds by sound as well as by sight can do nothing but enhance your birding experience no matter where you are. But, a lot of people have trouble learning the various songs and calls. CDs are fine for the few of us that have that great auditory memory, but that doesn’t seem to work for the majority of us. We can’t just listen to a 20-second snippet a few times and retain that newly-discovered association.

In other words, different people learn in different ways.

We passionately believe that anyone can learn to identify birds by sound and we are dedicated to making that happen for you. We do this through a combination of mnemonics, spectrograms, and repetitive listening to not only 20-second snippets, but much more lengthy recordings of various birds.

Birdsong 101 even throws in a lot of the variations that we’ve come across over the years on several species of birds. We will teach you how to use the many tools available to everyone to better learn birdsong including these variations. These techniques can be used with virtually any species. Best of all, you can get started for absolutely nothing!

Once you have mastered these techniques (which won’t take you very long at all), the world is open to you to move in any direction you wish.

Some people prefer a more one-on-one learning experience. That’s where our online training courses come in. Birdsong Basics is a free course that will give you everything you need to continue studying birdsong no matter where you are.

There are also options for more detailed “Focus” courses, our Birdsong 101 Master course, and even courses coming in the future on building your own birdsong library, using birdsong to advance bird conservation, and much more.

For now, though, just click on the “Introduction” button below to get started learning birdsong.
